About the project

It takes a village to have a great village

Tarrytown Connected is a process that will guide the Village's future planning and development. The current phase of the project seeks to build on recent strategic plans to create a new village-wide Comprehensive Plan and develop zoning guidelines for the area around the Metro-North station.

Over the course of 2017 and 2018, the process will continue to bring together local residents, workers, business owners, and Village Boards through public workshops and events to identify priorities, goals, and strategies to shape Tarrytown over the coming decades. The Comprehensive Plan will integrate this input and take the form of a new living document that articulates policies, principles, and initiatives for planning. The zoning guidelines will describe the forms and types of development that the Village would wish to see in the Station Area.

The Comprehensive Plan will outline goals and policies related to six central themes. These themes are broad categories that touch on all aspects of the community’s experience and direction for planning.

Economy will address planning for thriving downtown merchants and competitive business environment, as well as strategies to nurture tourism, plan for smart growth, and maintain the fiscal health of the village.

Mobility will focus on circulation both within the village and throughout the region, including the safety and ease of getting around Tarrytown, parking supply and demand, and navigation and access.

Built Environment  will consist of plans for all the physical aspects of the village: its buildings and streetscapes, including the character of the downtown area, the affordability of its housing stock, and the sustainability of local infrastructure.

Community, Culture & Education will explore strategies to further enhance the rich history and strong institutions that shape the village’s identity and support its residents, workers, and visitors.

Natural Environment & Open Space will discuss the protection of critical natural resources, opportunities to reduce waste generation and pollution, and access to the Hudson River, local and regional open space and trails, and recreational facilities.

Sustainability & Resiliency will identify strategies to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions as well as priorities for adapting to a changing climate in the coming decades.

What will all this look like?

What types of uses do we want to encourage? What kinds of open spaces do we need and where should they be? How tall should new buildings be? What are the trade-offs between development, preservation, the Village's tax base and traffic impacts?

Who is behind the scenes making this happen?

This is a transparent, open process initiated by the Village Board of Trustees and led by a Steering Committee, including numerous local volunteers and supported by a consultant team. You can learn more about who is involved here.

The input of Tarrytown's residents, businesses and property owners are the most important piece of this planning puzzle. Click here to add your voice to the conversation.
